How to Choose the Right Roof Melt System for Your Roof

how to choose the right roof melt system for your roof | HotEdge Roof Ice Dam PreventionYou want a roof ice melt system that has been engineered to fit your roof deck properly. But, what is the right melt system for your roof? This truly depends on the type of roof you have. Commercial roofs, which are commonly metal, will need a different system than a wooden roof that is shingled.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Shingle roofs require a unique approach to ice dam prevention. While we recommend for your roof edges our patented product, HotShingleLok, there are also several other products that can address other problem areas on a roof deck. For example, ice dams can form in the  valleys on your roof. Using HotValley, ice build-up in roof valleys can be eliminated.  All products rely on direct heat transfer using a commercial grade self-regulating heating cable.

Metal Roofs

Metal roofs were designed to shed snowpack, hence, should not hold snowpack for as long as other roof types. Unless, of course, an ice dam is allowed to form on the roof edge! When roof edges are heated, metal roofs allow snow to slide right off of the metal edge.  Another problematic area is metal roof valleys.  The issue is that many metal roofs have what is called a “blind valley.” This is an area of the roof where snowpack will collide and compress causing an ice dam to form.

As a result, you’ll need a professional opinion and approach to effectively melt the snow and prevent snow melt water from re-freezing on your metal roof.

Synthetic Slate Roofs

Synthetic slate roofs also suffers from ice dams. These aesthetically pleasing roofs are very heavy. Weighing more than traditional asphalt, and having a thicker composition, synthetic slate will require a unique melting system that allows enough heat to reach the exterior of the slate.

With the 3-D appearance, synthetic slate can also catch more snow than other roof types. You’ll need to take a unique approach when installing the right roof melt system on a synthetic slate roof.

HotEdge, LLC has engineered a product specifically for synthetic slate roof shingles, HotSlateLOK.  HotSlateLOK has been designed with a wider cavity to lock onto a synthetic slate roof edge.  For synthetic slate roof valleys, HotValley is the product that is recommended.
